My Life... Sophie Evans
We talk to Sophie Evans, General Manager at Powells Jewellery
How would you describe yourself?
I am someone who is just trying to get the most out of life, I’m determined and a hard worker, but I make sure I take some rest when needed which normally means going for a walk or seeing family. I love what I do for a living, it enables me to work with my passion, gemmology, which I am lucky to be able to do! I manage our three shops in Chester and am also a qualified gemmologist and diamond grader which means I can identify gemstones and understand their scientific nature.
Where is home? And work?
I live in North Wales which is great for access to the amazing Welsh countryside and the bustling city of Chester where I work. I love working in Chester, it’s a city that isn’t too big but has lots of things to do and some great places to get a bite to eat. It’s always nice walking along the river and having an ice cream when the sun is shining.
What did you want to be when you were younger?
All sorts of things from batman to a pilot to a police officer! A little bit different to what I do now but I’m quite happy working with the beautiful gems that nature creates.
Name a few of your favourite places to be...
This is an easy one, I absolutely love being out in nature, I’m lucky to have Moel Famau on my doorstep so I’ll often be up early for a climb and a bit of peace at the top. I also enjoy walks with my dad around Bickerton and Burwardsley which normally end up in one of the locals for a tasty lunch.
What or who inspires you?
I’ve started to compete in kettlebell sport so in that sense the women in the sport are very inspirational with their strength and determination, so I draw from that, other amazing athletes like Emily Campbell the Olympic Weightlifting silver medallist is a very inspiring woman.
What was the last gift you gave someone?
It was a gift for my husband, a delayed Christmas present but he loves the Welsh artist Kyffin Williams and has a couple of his prints, so I found a book featuring a good selection of his artwork. It went down well.
Tell us a secret/fun fact?
Did you know that a lot of stars in the universe have diamond cores? The largest one found to date weighs a staggering 10 billion trillion carats and is 4000km in diameter which is larger than our moon.
What would your Mastermind subject be?
Hmm it would either be gemmology or Fawlty Towers, my childhood consisted of watching episodes on repeat, so I’d like to think I know them like the back of my hand.
Can you share a story from your wedding?
Well, the entire day was just amazing and luckily, we didn’t have any hiccups that I can remember. We did hire some brilliant entertainers who were Laurel and Hardy lookalikes. They stayed in character the whole time, entertained the guests with jokes, magic and general Laurel and Hardy shenanigans.
