Q&A With Deepbridge Chester Arts Fair

Q&A With Deepbridge Chester Arts Fair

Craig Hough sits down with Laura O'Hare to discuss her upcoming Chester Arts Fair at Chester Race Course

You established the Deepbridge Chester Arts Fair back in 2012, what brought about the decision to create the fair and host in Chester?
Whilst working as a solicitor, I wanted to use my network and love of art to support the community. My first event was to raise money for the charity Claire House whilst promoting talented local artists. Then. together with my business partner Shirley-Ann O’Neill. we identified a gap in the market, as every other major global city hosts an annual large-scale contemporary arts fair. So, we took the plunge to leave our corporate careers to focus on creating an international arts fair. Now celebrating its 8th edition, the Fair is widely recognised as the most prestigious UK art fair outside of London.

In a nutshell, what can visitors expect for a day out at Deepbridge Chester Arts Fair?
The Fair welcomes novices, art enthusiasts and seasoned art collectors alike. There is something to suit everyone’s taste, with live art demonstrations, talks and workshops. Meet with over 120 artists with a choice of 3,000 pieces of art, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography and
mixed media. We also have a dedicated children’s area for young artists to enjoy.

Over the years Deepbridge Chester Arts Fair has worked closely with galleries to secure original artwork collections of such artists like Pablo Picasso and L.S Lowry for visitors to view and purchase. What names can visitors expect this year?
2019 looks set to be our most exciting fair to date. We are proud to announce investment works by Banksy and Damien Hurst. Award-winning international ceramic sculptor, Emma Rogers will be unveiling her new collection. We will also be welcoming Royal artist Sir John Demari, with his iconic vibrant oil fine artwork.

In the past, the event has raised thousands for both local and national charities. What have you done in the past to fundraise and what have you planned for 2019?
We are passionate about the benefits of art therapy. In the past we have held auctions and had famous works on sale. This year we are honoured to be working with our sponsors’ Deepbridge Capital and Hillyer McKeown to raise funds for children’s cancer charity, The Joshua Tree. Art therapy gives children a safe place to express themselves using art, pictures and stories.

This can improve the child’s self-esteem, benefitting them emotionally and intellectually. 100 per cent of proceeds will go to buying art therapy sessions. A collection of artwork pieces will be live on our website for the public to bid for in the run up to the fair, as well as on display at the fair.

Chester Arts Fair takes place on 15-17th November at Chester Racecourse.
