The Sunday Roast Review - 20 Stories

The quintessentially British Sunday Roast is one of our most popular dishes, so we sent the team out to sample some of the best in the region

David Poynton and family took to the rooftops of Manchester for their Sunday Roast in Spinningfield

On our way to 20 Stories, we walked through the vibrant Spinningfields district of Manchester. Competition for bars and restaurants in this part of Manchester is especially tough, so we were very keen to see how 20 Stories are trying to stand out from the local competition. As we approached the entrance one could easily mistake it for just another office tower. However, we couldn’t have been more mistaken. We were greeted by a friendly receptionist who took our coats and guided us to the elevator which took us directly to the 19 floor and to 20 stories.

At this point it felt like we had discovered a secret bar and restaurant, we had arrived mid-afternoon on a busy bank holiday Sunday and the atmosphere was one of sophistication yet fun. We checked in with the hostess who was very accommodating and we had a drink at the bar before our meal. The cocktail we chose was a Truffle Honey Old Fashioned which is a great take on a classic with a twist and beautifully presented. We also had the 20 stories Pale Ale which is everything I have come to enjoy about modern pale ale served on draught

Live music was being played which complimented the atmosphere as we took our drinks out to the roof terrace, which is truly stunning. The lush décor

inside flows out onto the terrace perfect for a 19th floor roof terrace in this trendy part of Manchester.

Once seated for our meal we browsed the extensive wine menu and the sommelier guided us to our choice- a Kekfrankos from Hungary. This for us was a perfect red for a hearty Sunday lunch. Our server Andre was excellent; he explained the menu in a detailed way that made us want to order all of the dishes. For starters, we ordered the ham hock and trotter croquettes, and the chicken and foie gras terrine, both were presented with precision and were adequately portioned.

For our mains, we went traditional having roasted topside of beef and rolled pork belly both served with traditional garnish. The vegetables were perfectly cooked and served separately allowing for us to build our lunch in accordance with our appetite. The beef was cooked medium rare therefore allowing all of the flavour to come through. The pork was moist and was matched with a luxurious mash and cauliflower cheese.

For dessert, we chose the lemon tart and the carrot cake. Once again the presentation was on point and these desserts rounded off what was a very enjoyable afternoon. If you are looking to enjoy a few drinks and a relaxed meal on a Sunday afternoon out with friends and family, 20 Stories needs to make your short list.

Not only will you not be disappointed I am sure you will be quite impressed.
